Listen, I'm not going to say that we are starting to scrape the ol' barrel o' content due to some labor issues but... yeesh. And on that note, let's get to it already:
Wednesday - July 19
Netflix / The Deepest Breath (documentary). From director Laura McGann comes this bracing documentary about two freedivers, a couple both in love with each other and with their shared goal of diving deepest on only the last gasp of air in their lungs. Reviews are generally positive, with a consistent note: 'How you feel about The Deepest Breath may ultimately come down to how you respond to its structure, which leans heavily on withheld information.' Trailer here.
Thursday - July 20
Max / Superpowered: The DC Story (docuseries). This 3 part documentary series explores the history of DC comics, the rise of superheroes, and, per a few reviews, the role that Warner Bros. executives played in ensuring that the comics' IP is appropriately exploited. (Please clap.) Includes interviews with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Dwayne Johnson (Black Adam), and more. Trailer here.
Returning - Netflix, Sweet Magnolias; truTV, Tacoma FD
Friday - July 21
Apple TV+ / Stephen Curry: Underrated (documentary). Simultaneously premiering in theaters today, this documentary by director Peter Nicks follows the career of NBA superstar Steph Curry and his path from a scrawny underdog into one of the most fearsome players on the court. (And on the golf course.) Trailer here.
Netflix / They Cloned Tyrone (movie). Jamie Foxx (Collateral) stars in this thriller about a conspiracy involving cloning that feels like a throwback to the Blaxploitation films of the '70's crossed with various sci-fi classics, including Invasion of the Body Snatchers (and tellingly, this also stars Kiefer Sutherland whose father Donald Sutherland starred in the 1978 adaptation of the film). Reviews are mixed but positive: 'an odd, slightly baffling but likable piece of work.' Performance review season already? Also stars John Boyega (Attack the Block) and Teyonah Parris (WandaVision).Trailer here.
Starz / Minx, S2. Notable return. Canceled by (then) HBO Max, this well-reviewed series about a '70's era erotic magazine was picked up by rival streamer Starz - and its first season is also available to watch on Starz. Stars the amazingly named Ophelia Lovibond (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Jake Johnson (Drinking Buddies).
Freeform / Praise Petey, S1 (animated). When a New York City trendsetter suffers a fall from grace, she moves back to her hometown and does what any influencer worth her salt would do: she sets out to modernize her dad's cult... that she inherited after he died. Features the voice work of Annie Murphy (Kevin Can F*** Himself), Christine Baranski (Chicago), Stephen Root (Office Space), and John Cho (The Afterparty). Trailer here.
Sunday - July 23
Paramount+ / Special Ops: Lioness, S1. Yellowstone's creator Taylor Sheridan continues his prolific ways with yet another new series, this one about a CIA program that trains female undercover agents, led by a station chief played by Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy). Stellar cast also includes Nicole Kidman (Bewitched) and Morgan Freeman (Bucket List). Trailer here.
Monday - July 24
Hulu / Futurama, S8(ish). Returning on a new network after a decades-long break, the sci-fi comedy that spawned a thousand memes returns with its entire original voice cast intact. Take my money! Trailer here.
Returning - Max, Teenage Euthanasia
