Not a lot of premieres but a few notable returning (and final) seasons so with that, let's get to it already:
Wednesday - August 2
Hulu / Reservation Dogs, S3 (final season). The critically-acclaimed series returns for a final season that has garnered raves ('superb' and 'goes out on a high note').
Apple TV+ / Physical, S3 (final season). Zooey Deschanel (Elf) is blonde once more as she joins the third and final season of Rose Byrne's dark comedy about aerobics, eating disorders, and so much more. Trailer here.
Netflix / Mark Cavendish: Never Enough (documentary). Sprinting great Mark Cavendish is the subject of this deep-dive into 'the Manx Missile' and his remarkable cycling career, including tying the record for most sprinting stage wins with legend Eddy Merckx.
Netflix / Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food (documentary). Premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, this doc dismantles the myth that the US food supply is the safest in the world when foodborne pathogens kill thousands of Americans every year.
Returning - CBS, Big Brother; Disney+, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures
Thursday - August 3
Netflix / Heartstopper, S2. This sweet teen show remains 'blissfully queer' and 'euphoric' in its second season, expanding its focus beyond leads Nick and Charlie and becoming more of an ensemble-driven drama with winning results. Trailer here.
Also returning - MTV, Jersey Shore Family Vacation; Netflix, The Lincoln Lawyer
Friday - August 4
Prime Video / The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (miniseries). Reviews are positive for this sweeping 7 part Australian series based on Holly Ringland's book of the same name about a 9 year old orphan who moves to a flower farm run by her grandmother (Sigourney Weaver, Ghostbusters) that offers refuge to orphaned or abused women and girls. As she grows into a young woman, she learns how the women of the farm communicate through the symbolism of the flowers - and uncovers the secrets in her family's past. Also stars Alycia Debnam-Carey (The 100). Trailer here.
Returning - Showtime, The Chi
Sunday - August 6
Max / Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, S2. The 7 episode sophomore season follows the Lakers from the '81-82 season through 1984, along with their rivalry with the Celtics, including one player in particular - Larry Bird (newcomer Sean Patrick Small) - along with Celtics' coach Red Auerbach (Michael Chiklis, Fantastic Four). Scant reviews at this time but positive so far ('continues to be the perfect mix of sports and melodrama'). Trailer here.
Tuesday - August 8
Hulu / Only Murders in the Building, S3. Picking up where season 2 left off, the third season adds Paul Rudd (Clueless) and Meryl Streep (Death Becomes Her) to the cast, along with Jesse Williams (Grey's Anatomy). Reviews are raves: the trio of Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez continue to delight while once again bickering on how best to solve the latest murder in their midst. In other words, 'one thing is clear: do not miss this show.'
And that's it for the week! Programming note: I'm off next week. See you August 16! Meanwhile, please enjoy this simulacrum of me, jumping into vacation mode. Just check that form, people.
